What's a complete sentence

Couldn't find a definition for "complete sentence" in the ELA Glossary. What is the definition of a complete sentence for NYSAA? How much leeway is allowed in grammar and phrasing before it must be marked incorrect (see attached)?

would this work product meet the intent of the task? 4th grade ELA 22306?

Donna

Hi Donna,

Thank you for the question. At its most basic and beginning level a sentence can be considered correct as long as it has a noun and a verb (e.g., dog ran). The student work provided could be considered correct. We've typically said as long as the student response is a basic sentence (noun and verb) any additional level of detail regarding the completeness or complexity of the sentence is up to the teacher based on typical classroom instruction. It would be good practice for the teacher to create a rubric to determine student performance; for example a certain number of points for a logical response, a certain number of points for a sentence that contains a noun and verb in logical sequence, a certain number of points for correct capitalization, and a certain number of points for correct punctuation. Please let us know if you have further questions.

Thank you,

Kelly
