Touch Math & More

Grade 3, Math 12109 (you wrote 12109, but the AGLI text you indicated is 13104, the response is based on AGLI 13104)- Add and/or subtract whole numbers 1-9 using manipulatives.

Is touch math considered to be a manipulative? What is the definition of "manipulative" - does it need to be a 3-dimensional object that can be "manipulated" or can it be 1 dimensional pictures, objects, tic mark, etc. RESPONSE: Touch Math is listed in the glossary as a strategy same as manipulatives, mental math, calculator, etc. Use of the touch points on the numbers could be acceptable as manipulative. A manipulative could be a block, tic mark, a sticker, a square printed on the worksheet next to the number, etc. For a manipulative both 1-dimensional and 3-dimensional are fine depending on the needs of the student. For some of the students that take NYSAA, they may not be physically moving something and that is okay.

Grade 4, Math 13106 Add and/or subtract one-digit numbers
SAT - Solve simple one-digit addition and/or subtraction problems using a set of concrete objects
Can Touch Math replace the words "concrete objects"? This is really the same as above.... the staff asking it want clarification as to whether the term "concrete objects" pertains only to 3-dimensional objects that can be "manipulated" or can they be 1 dimensional pictures, objects, tic mark, etc. RESPONSE: Similar to manipulative, a concrete object is not necessarily a 3-dimensional object. For this AGLI it is only indicating “add and/or subtract one-digit numbers” the SAT indicates using a set of concrete objects, it is fine for the teacher to modify the SAT to indicate “using Touch Math”.
