ELA & More

Grade 4 ELA SAT 21102 – identify the main idea of an “informational text”....can this text can be created by the teacher? If yes, does "informational text" created by a teacher need to meet the criteria in the definition in the glossary. RESPONSE: It is acceptable for the teacher to create his/her own text. The teacher may also take an existing informational text and modify it to better suit the needs of the student. The definition in the ELA glossary is: informational text is organized by topic and supporting details, whereas literary text is organized by the structure of a story, poem, or drama. This is a broad definition because there are many different texts that would be considered informational text. The definition in the ELA glossary for literary text is: a wide range of texts that tell a story to make a point, express a personal opinion, or provide an enjoyable experience. Think about the literary elements (e.g., plot, character, setting, etc.) that may make up a literary text and it will likely look different than an informational text. Please direct your teacher to review the glossary for further information.

Grade 6 ELA 21310 - Compose answers to literal questions about explicit text in an appropriate organizational format. Also 21319 - Organize the main idea and supporting details or examples in an appropriate organizational format.
Please define "organizational format" and give examples of what might be appropriate for each of these AGLIs. For 21310, is it the appropriate "format" for the student to be answering questions in writing, without using any type of graphic organizer. RESPONSE: The organizational format can be determined by the teacher based on what the teacher is assessing the student on with regarding to organizational format. An example of organizational format for AGLI 21310 “compose the answers to literal questions about explicit text in an appropriate organizational format” could be complete sentences (this is what is indicated in SAT21310) because the AGLI is assessing the student demonstrating his/her knowledge, skills, and understanding in composing answers to literal questions with those answers being shown in an organized manner as determined by the teacher assessing the student. An example of organizational format for AGLI 21309 “organize the main idea and supporting details or examples in an appropriate organizational format” could be a graphic organizer because the AGLI is assessing the student on demonstrating his/her knowledge, skill, and understanding in organizing main idea and supporting details/examples in an organized manner as determined by the teacher assessing the student.
