Hi Kelly
As per your conversation with Tom:
In an AGLI such as HS Science, page 58, AGLI #32310: “use tools to measure various weather conditions”, is the word “to” meant as “and”? In other words, does the task and student performance data/evidence have to show the student both using tools and measuring various weather conditions or might it be acceptable for the student to use tools in the context of an activity related to weather measurement?
Thanks
Nanette
Hi Nanette,
Thank you for the question. In this AGLI 32310 “use tools to measure various weather conditions” the verb is “use” and the direct object is the phrase “tools to measure various weather conditions”—the student is being assessed on his/her demonstration of the knowledge, skills, and understanding of the appropriate use of tools—the tools that need to be used are ones that measure weather conditions, such as a thermometer, barometer, etc. and not other types of tools such as a microscope. The “to” in the AGLI does not function as an “and”. Another example of an AGLI with a “to” is HS ELA AGLI11210 “identify relevant facts and/or data to support given topic”. In this case, the student is being assessed on his/her ability to identify relevant facts and/or data. The identified facts and/or data need to support the given topic and not just random facts and/or data. The “to” in the AGLI is part of the context of the AGLI as a whole but is not specifically treated as an “and” would be in an AGLI. Please let us know if you have further questions.
Thank you,
