Hi Nanette
Would inquire about the language issue we all discussed at the meeting?
I have a student who receives Bilingual Instruction (as per IEP). The student is in class with an Alternate Placement Paraprofessional who speaks Arabic when needed.
ELA must be in English.
What about Math, Social Studies, Science?

Hi Nanette,
Thank you for the question. I believe we’ve answered this one, but just in case—here is the response we provided previously (please note: the guidance has not changed):
Referencing the guidelines on page 15 of the Administration Manual is correct-it states: “All verifying evidence for ELA must be submitted in English. It is acceptable to submit verifying evidence for mathematics, science, and social studies in languages other than English.” Therefore, when conducting the ELA content area the assessment must be completed in English and the verifying evidence submitted for each ELA AGLI (Required Component 1 & 2) must also be in English. However, the other content areas required for a particular grade level may be conducted in the student’s native language or in English. There are no requirements that the other content areas must be completed in the student’s native language. The guidelines regarding this have not changed from last year’s NYSAA Administration guidelines.
Please let us know if you have any further questions regarding this or need any additional clarification.
Thank you,
