The following questions came up at today's training
Grade 6 - Math 42105 solve simple whole number equation(s) involving
addition and/or subtraction
The SAT was the same as in the book. The worksheet looked as
follows:
1. 1 + ___ = 8
2. ___ + 3 = 10
3. 2 + 2 = ___
(There were actually boxes where I have written blank lines)
a. Is this okay? RESPONSE: THE WORKSHEET PROBLEMS THAT YOU HAVE
PROVIDED ARE WHOLE NUMBER EQUATIONS. THESE WOULD BE FINE AND APPEAR TO
CONNECT TO THE TASK.
b. There were some suggestions that the teacher should change the
items all to look like #3 above (student fills in only boxes that follow
the = sign....none are to the left of the = sign.) If this was the
layout of the worksheet, would it connect? (or would that be considered
more like basic addition vs. algebraic equations?) RESPONSE: THE
DEFINITION OF 'EQUATION' IN THE MATHEMATICS GLOSSARY IS: A MATHEMATICAL
SENTENCE WHERE THE LEFT SIDE OF THE EQUAL SIGN HAS THE SAME VALUE AS THE
RIGHT SIDE. EXAMPLE: 6+4=10; THE INTENT OF THE AGLI IS TO SOLVE WHOLE
NUMBER EQUATIONS. THE BLANKS DO NOT NEED TO ONLY BE AT THE END OF THE
EQUATION. IN SOME CASES SOLVING EQUATIONS COULD LOOK SIMILAR TO BASIC
OPERATIONS. PLEASE SEE THE EXAMPLE PROVIDED IN SAT42202A, WHICH IS FOR
AN AGLI WITH A SIMILAR INTENT, THE EXAMPLE PROVIDED IS 5-__=3 (IN THIS
EXAMPLE THE BLANK BOX--WHAT THE STUDENT IS SOLVING FOR IS ON THE LEFT
SIDE OF THE EQUATION.)
Grade 7 ELA: 32107 identify story elements (e.g., character, plot,
settig, etc.)
Do they need to identify more than 1 element, since it is plural?
RESPONSE: THE AGLI IS PLURAL, THEREFORE THE TASK AND VE (IN TOTAL) ALSO
NEED TO BE PLURAL--MEANING THE STUDENT SHOULD BE DEMONSTRATING HIS OR
HER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND UNDERSTANDING IN IDENTIFYING MORE THAN ONE
ELEMENT.
Note - If the answer is that 1 is sufficient...it would be really
helpful if all AGLIs that have plurals, but where only 1 is sufficient,
could be rewritten with the () clarifying this option. ....i.e.:
"element(s)"
