Math Gr 3 and 8 Questions and Responses

Questions from Collegial Session
Grade 8 - Math 43108 when given a repeating number and/or shape
pattern, extend the pattern
Task: ....student will extend the pattern by filling in the missing
shape (SAT example)
Worksheet: Pattern of several shapes with a blank line at the end
where the next shape in the pattern would appear. Student
was then given two pictures of shapes to choose from and had to
circle the correct shape to complete the pattern.
Question: Since the student did not actually "fill in" the blank to
extend the pattern, is it okay?

RESPONSE: THIS IS ACCEPTABLE. IF THE
TEACHER IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SPECIFIC SAMPLE ASSESSMENT TASK WORDING, THEN HE OR SHE CAN MODIFY IT TO MAKE IT MORE SPECIFIC TO THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATION OF HIS OR HER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND UNDERSTANDING RELATED TO THE AGLI.

Grade 3 - Math 13101 recognize the concepts of addition and/or
subtraction
Task: Recognize the concept of subtraction by removing one object
from a group of objects (SAT 1301B)
Question: Teacher used a multi-step worksheet. The step indicated
was that the student would "remove 1 object". The student then did this
for 5 different trials for each date. Accuracy & independence were
scored on the single step and the student's response over the 5 trials.
Teacher probably should have used the discrete trial data collection
sheet.... but they did not. Rather than switching sheets (to the
discrete trial which they are not really familiar with and might make
other errors) can they just annotate the multi-step sheet to indicate
that the step of "remove 1 object" was repeated for 5 trials per date?

RESPONSE: A TEACHER ANNOTATIOIN WOULD BE HELPFUL IN EXPLAINING THE
ACTIVITY. IT IS NOT ABSOLUTELY NECESSSARY THAT THE TEACHER USE THE
DISCRETE TRIAL DCS, ESPECIALLY NOW TO TRANSFER INFORMATION ALREADY
COLLECTED AND CHANCE MISSING A REQUIRED FIELD ON THE DCS. ALSO, AS A
REMINDER, ACCORDING TO THE ADMINISTRATION GUIDELINES, IT IS ACCEPTABLE
FOR TEACHERS TO "CREATE OR USE AN EXISTING DATA COLLECTION SHEET THAT IS
APPLICABLE TO AN INDIVIDUAL STUDENT'S NEEDS. THESE DATA COLLECTION
SHEETS MUST INCLUDE THE SEVEN REQUIRED ELEMENTS AND MEET ALL FO THE SAME REQUIREMENTS DESCRIBED PREVIOUSLY." (PAGE 20)
