Questions and Answers in Caps from Collegial Reviews

Grade 4 Math, 22104, page 34 “recognize the days of the week” – must all seven days be included? The SAT 22104A “The student will recognize the days of the week when given a set of word cards with the days of the week and distracters” does not specify if all seven must be included.. RESPONSE: WE SENT A RESPONSE TO NANETTE'S QUESTION WHICH WAS SIMILAR. HERE IS THE RESPONSE:

IT IS ACCEPTABLE FOR THE STUDENT TO RECOGNIZE SOME OF THE DAYS OF THE WEEK. HE/SHE DOES NOT HAVE TO RECOGNIZE ALL SEVEN DAYS OF THE WEEK. SAT22104B SEEMS SIMILAR TO WHAT YOU ARE ASKING-IT STATES "THE STUDENT WILL RECOGNIZE THE CORRECT DAY OF THE WEEK WHEN GIVEN A SET OF CHOICES." IN THIS CASE THE STUDENT IS ONLY WORKING ON ONE DAY. THEREFORE, ACROSS THE TWO PIECES OF VE THE STUDENT WILL WORK ON DAYS-NOT NECESSARILY ALL DAYS.
Grade 8 ELA , 11104, page 3 “relate fact(s) and/or idea(s) to chosen topic – the student completed work sheet matching the SAT 11104A using Mayer Johnson picture symbols labeled with the name of the symbol in Spanish and English (the student is designated Bilingual) – Is this acceptable? RESPONSE: AS OUTLINED IN PAGE 15 OF THE ADMINISTRATION MANUAL, ELA VERIFYING EVIDENCE MUST BE SUBMITTED IN ENGLISH. WE HAVE CC'D CYNTHIA WILSON, AT THE DEPARTMENT, SO SHE CAN PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION ON THIS QUESTION.

HS Science, 31209, page 50, “recognize the Earth spins on its axis” – The possible Evidence listed for the SAT 31209 “The student will recognize the Earth spins on its axis by attending to a model of the Earth on its axis and participating in making it move” is a time segmented data collection sheet. Can you elaborate on how this sheet would be used? We are questioning this since the SAT has both attending and participating in making it move and the time segmented sheet does not seem to easily allow capturing both.

We have the same difficulty with Grade 6 ELA, 12001, page 8, and the SAT11201 which also lists using a time segmented data collection sheet RESPONSE: A TEACHER DOES NOT HAVE TO USE THE POSSIBLE DATAFOLIO PRODUCTS, SO ANOTHER TYPE OF VE WOULD BE GOOD TO USE, SUCH AS PHOTOGRAPHS OR VIDEO TAPE. ALSO, THE DATA COLLECTION SHEETS PROVIDED IN THE ADMINISTRATION MANUAL ARE SAMPLES AND CAN BE MODIFIED AS APPROPRIATE. AS LONG AS THE TEACHER MAKES IT CLEAR THAT THE STUDENT PERFORMANCE CALCULATIONS OF LEVEL OF ACCURACY AND LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE ASSESSMENT TASK THEN IT IS ACCEPTABLE. IN THIS CASE ONE WAY TO DO IT IS THE TEACHER COULD USE SEGMENT ONE AND TWO FOR THE ATTENDING ASPECT AND SEGMENT THREE FOR THE PARTICIPATING ASPECT, A NOTATION ON THE DATA COLLECTION SHEET EXPLAINING THE PERFORMANCE CALCULATION WOULD BE HELPFUL TO HAVE TO MAKE IT CLEAR.

We have also had some discussion about whether it is acceptable for a data collection sheet to be used with verifying evidence for any two of the last three dates. For example, the DSS lists the dates 11/11, 11/ 14 and 11/15, the data collection sheet lists these three dates as the last dates and the verifying evidence is an OVF dated 11/11 and one dated 11/15. Some participants at the training have cited that they had made a note that this was not acceptable but we cannot locate that in the Administrative Manual (pages 18 and 19). Can you clarify this please? RESPONSE: THE ADMINISTRATION GUIDELINES OUTLINE THAT THE DATES DOCUMENTED ON THE DATA SUMMARY SHEET BE THE LAST THREE DATES OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE OF THE ASSESSMENT TASK. IF THE DATA COLLECTION SHEET HAS THE LAST THREE DATES OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE OF THE ASSESSMENT TASK AND THESE THREE DATES ARE DOCUMENTED ON THE DATA SUMMARY SHEET, THE TEACHER CAN SUBMIT SUPPORTING EVIDENCE FOR ANY TWO OF THE THREE DATES ON THE DATA COLLECTION SHEET. YES, IN THE EXAMPLE YOU PROVIDED THE DATES OF 11/11 AND 11/15 COULD HAVE SUPPORTING EVIDENCE.
Thank you.
