7th Gr ELA Question on 2 step directions

Hi Kelly,

We have a question in reference to 7th grade ELA AGLI 31201 Listen to and follow two step directions that provide information about a task or assignment. What we have seen in collegial review is that MANY teachers in several schools have used the SAT exactly as given on page 14 “Listen to and follow two step directions that provide information about a task or assignment.” With the note that states that the direction must be given as a whole not broken into steps. However all teachers that have used this AGLI have broken down the evidence as a two step data collection form when reporting it and when questioned have stated that the initial direction was given as a whole and the student was in some cases able to complete the whole task, one part or another or no portion. Is this acceptable or must it be written as a single step on the data collection sheet.
RESPONSE: AS OUTLINED IN THE 2008-09 ADMINISTRATION GUIDELINES A TEACHER MAY TASK ANALYZE AN ACTIVITY IN ORDER TO COLLECT STUDENT PERFORMANCE DATA SPECIFIC TO THE SEQUENCE OR STEPS INVOLVED. PLEASE SEE THE INFORMATION PROVIDED ON PAGES 14 AND 15 (STEP 7: PREPARE TO COLLECT DATA). THE TEACHER MAY CHOOSE TO COLLECT THE DATA BROKEN OUT OR AS A SINGLE DATA COLLECTION POINT—WHICHEVER THEY FEEL IS MOST APPROPRIATE FOR HIS/HER STUDENT. THE IMPORTANT PART THAT MUST BE KEPT IN MIND WITH REGARDS TO THIS AGLI IS THAT THE DIRECTIONS THE STUDENT IS TO FOLLOW ARE GIVEN/STATED/SIGNED AS A WHOLE AND NOT BROKEN OUT. SINCE THIS WAS QUESTIONED DURING YOUR REVIEWS, IT WOULD BE GOOD PRACTICE FOR THE TEACHER TO INCLUDE A NOTATION ON THE EVIDENCE INDICATING HOW THE DIRECTIONS WERE GIVEN, HOW TASK TOOK PLACE, AND ANY OTHER APPLICABLE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ACTIVITY.
