Questions and Answers in Caps
1. If a teacher is using student work as evidence, do both pieces have to be the last two dates recorded on the DSS, or can it be ANY of the 3 dates on the DSS? I remember one year it was acceptable to use work from the 1st and 3rd dates, for example. Is this still acceptable? RESPONSE: AS STATED ON PAGE 24 OF THE ADMINISTRATION MANUAL "SELECT TWO PIECES OF VERIFYING EVIDENCE WHICH CONFIRM STUDENT PERFORMANCE DATA FOR THE LAST TWO DATES ON WHICH THE TASK WAS CONDUCTED DURING THE ADMINISTRATION PERIOD." THE OTHER ACCEPTIONS WERE PART OF THE SCORING PROCEDURES WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN FINALIZED. TEACHERS SHOULD BE FOLLOWING THE INFORMATION WITHIN THE ADMINISTRATION GUIDELINES WHEN PUTTING TOGETHER THE DATAFOLIO.
2. 8th Grade NYSAA in ELA, there are similar AGLIs in both reading and writing.
We have a teacher who did 11103 (identify the main idea and/or supporting details in informational text) and then used a data collection sheet with the steps of main idea, detail 1, detail 2, and detail 3.
Then for the second ELA AGLI she used 21101 (connect details to main idea example(s) using a graphic organizer). She then used a DCS with steps main idea, detail 1, detail 2, detail 3.
Will be accepted since the 2 DCS have the same steps? the activities the student completed were very different, but this a student with autism and using the DCS was an easier option for the teacher.
RESPONSE: THE TEACHER MAY CHOOSE TO USE ANY OF THE FOUR TYPES OF VERIFYING EVIDENCE. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE GUIDELINES THAT STATE IF THEY USE ONE TYPE OF EVIDENCE FOR ONE AGLI THAT THEY CANNOT USE THAT TYPE OF EVIDENCE SOMEWHERE ELSE. WE UNDERSTAND THAT THE EVIDENCE MAY LOOK SIMILAR, ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE DESCRIPTION YOU HAVE PROVIDED; HOWEVER, AS YOU HAVE INDICATED THE ACTIVITIES THE STUDENT COMPLETED WERE VERY DIFFERENT. THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE EVIDENCE AS YOU HAVE DESCRIBED IT. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THE CONNECTION PROGRESSION 1.) AGLI FROM GRADE LEVEL, 2.) TASK CONNECTS TO AGLI, AND 3.) VE CONNECTS TO TASK.
3. Finally, in HS ELA there is an AGLI about reading to identify main idea and details. The students are reading a passage and using a graphic organizer to organize the details, as per the task. The question is: If students are underlining sentences as they read the passage, then using that to complete the organizer, is that considered prompting or will it at scoring? RESPONSE: GIVEN THE INFORMATION YOU HAVE PROVIDED IT SOUNDS LIKE THE STUDENT IS INDEPENDENTLY USING A STRATEGY TO HELP THEMSELVES IDENTIFY THE NECESSARY INFORMATION IN THE STORY AND THEN TO COMPLETE THE GRAPHIC ORGANIZER-THERE DOESN'T APPEAR TO BE ANYTHING WITHIN THIS DESCRIPTION THAT SEEMS LIKE THE TEACHER IS PROMPTING THE STUDENT TO THE CORRECT ANSWER. PLEASE SEE INFORMATION ABOUT CUES AND PROMPTS PROVIDED ON PAGE 24 OF THE ADMINISTRATIO MANUAL.
Thanks!
