Math Prompts

A question came up yesterday at one of our collegial reviews.
5th grade math AGLI 11108- Order whole numbers
The task is a worksheet of cut out numbers 1-5 that the student had to put in order on a number line.
The directions state” Order numbers one through five”. One and five are bolded and underlined. Are the directions considered a prompt since it is stating one through five?

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,

Thank you for the question. Given the scenario you provided it does not appear that the directions are prompting the student specifically. The student still needs to know the difference between the look of a number 1 and a number 3, for example, and where each number goes on a number line in relation to each other. If the number cards have the number text on them also, that would be a different situation, but you’ve indicated the worksheet just has cut out numbers. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thank you,
Kelly
