I have a couple of quick question regarding Tasks in 8th grade social studies:
1: 13106 p.61 AGLI locate on a world map or globe the continent or country of his/her family's country of ancestry.
One of the students country of ancestry is an island in the Carribbean. If you are going to do a student work sample using a map, the question is "if you choose to do the country of origin, can you enlarge a cross section of the map to make the island a viable/noticeable choice? RESPONSE: IT IS ACCEPTABLE TO USE A PORTION OF A MAP; HOWEVER, IT WOULD GUIDE THE STUDENT IF THE COUNTRY OF ANCESTRY WAS MADE TO STAND OUT IN SOME WAY FROM THE OTHER ISLANDS COUNTRIES AROUND IT.
Second question:
Is this an assessment of the students ability to identify the continent/country by its shape (no names on the locations) or the ability to identify the locations by sight and name? RESPONSE: THE INTENT OF THE AGLI IS TO LOCATE THE COUNTRY OF ANCESTRY ON A MAP OR GLOBE. IT IS OK FOR THE MAP OR GLOBE TO HAVE THE NAME OF THE COUNTRIES ON IT. IT WOULD BE GUIDING THE STUDENT IF THE COUNTRY WERE MADE DIFFERENT FROM THE REST FOR EXAMPLE ALL THE COUNTRIES ON THE MAP OR GLOBE HAVE THE NAME OF THE COUNTRY ON IT, BUT THE STUDENT’S COUNTRY OF ANCESTRY DOES NOT OR VICE VERSA.
